13. Cover art, how obvious and how true.
“It isn’t a new thing or a new discovery that
cover artists and graphic designers have created themes for CD’s, albums and
single covers, DVD’s and books. I’ve always found this fascinating. Part of me
always thinks that if I collect one of these themed designs and put them all
together it’ll tell a story. It’s always disappointing; I should know better,
that it’s just selling. It’s still telling a story through branding though,
even if half the story is only known by the designer.” – 2008.
I’ve been researching cover art, just for fun
I suppose… it was something to do. Anyway, I found this useful website http://www.bookcoverarchive.com.
I found that the covers I was drawn to the
most where the simple ones, the black and white ones mostly and the ones filled
with text and nothing more.
I’ve already started creating my own cover
art. I bought a book last year, Writers’
and Artist’s Yearbook Guide to Getting Published, by Harry Bingham, 2010.
It said how it’s useful to create your own cover art to give potential
publishers an idea of what the book could look like on the shelf. So, I started
creating. So far, I think, Amen is
the only one I really love.
